Permanent backup

Preserving data on disks (or any medium) for centuries presents several challenges due to physical and chemical degradation that can occur over time. How many floppy disks or CDs are still hidden away in basements and attics? How many of them are still readable (and error-free), and who in our vicinity would even be able to read them in such a case?

Some of the reasons for media failure include:

  • Physical degradation - scratching or material breakdown
  • Chemical degradation - oxidation and corrosion
  • Environmental Factors - humidity, fading by light
  • Incompatibility - tomorrow's technology may not be able to read the disk

Creating copies on various media and locations is probably the best way to prevent the above-mentioned problems, as well as various disasters or fluctuations in political situations. Fires, droughts, hurricanes, further ice ages, or cultural revolutions need not be a problem. History remembers many cases of libraries that burned down or cultural references that were deliberately destroyed by the ruling class. Thanks to blockchain, data are distributed around the world in such a way that they cannot be completely destroyed by such short-term inconveniences.
